CSCS Location of Underground Services

Who Should Attend?

The Course is designed to ensure that candidates are aware of the hazards involved in carrying out excavations particularly in relation to underground services. The course will provide candidates with the required skills to carry out suitable investigations.

Prerequisites

• Valid SOLAS Safe pass card or CSR Card
• Photographic ID (passport or drivers licence)
• PPS Number
• 18yrs +
• 1 passport photo
• 9 months roadwork experience operating as a candidate LUGS operator in construction
• No interpreters – must have B1 level of English in accordance with common European framework of reference ofr languages
• Have good colour vision, hearing, full use of trunk & neck & be able to undertake physical activities such as lifting & carrying 6kg cones & traffic signs on frames.

Aim

To equip attendees with the necessary skills and knowledge to conduct proper investigations of underground services before starting any work that may affect them, including all excavation and road-cutting activities.

• Cable Avoidance Tool (CAT) Modes – Power, Radio, Genny
• Use of CAT – Searching, Pinpointing, Tracing
• Use of Genny – Induction, Direct Connection, Clamping
• Troubleshooting – Lost Signals, Nulling Out, Depth Finding
• Excavation Safety
• Safe Backfilling Practices
• Requirements for Signing, Lighting & Guarding
• Health & Safety Requirements for Roadworks
• Practical Test

Assessment method

• Classroom based training with practical demonstration.
• Practical exercises using excavator/banksman to excavate around live services

Accreditation

Upon successful completion, participants will achieve a CSCS ID Card & QQI certification valid for 5 years.
